The Basket Press Winery

The Basket Press Winery - Château Tanunda has been restored back into a winery.

The new showcase winery was installed in the old west wing of the Château in 2006. The new production facility is designed to meticulously process small batches of premium fruit.

The winery features the latest in Basket Press development - Vaslin Bucher ‘JLB20’ Basket Press. This technology was not available to the industry four years ago. In addition, gentle crushing, careful selection and open fermentation along with a return to the traditional oak fermenters only used by the great houses of Europe are highlights of the significant investment in quality made by the Geber family for this facility.

Tim Smith, Château Tanunda’s Chief Winemaker's, desire is to “build a reputation at the Chateau for high quality wines that are unique and international in their styling. These wines will reflect the Barossa and its strengths yet have a Châteauness that sets them apart”. These will be wines that take Château Tanunda into the future while embracing its historic importance.

Our Winery is unique and extraordinary, we at Château Tanunda focus on:

  • Integrity – aesthetically beautiful that integrates with the current Chateau Tanunda architecture and environment
  • A consumer friendly approach for Chateau Tanunda’s visitors
  • Small and select wine production - 200 tonne capacity (which is equivalent to approx 12,000 cases)
  • A Vaslin and Bucher ‘JLB 20’ automated Basket Press. This style of press is the only one of its kind in Australia, reputable as the ‘Rolls Royce’ of winemaking equipment across the world
  • The key design principle of this press is gentle handling and pressing. The press is programmable with soft pressing cycles
  • The static pressing and self draining capabilities give a clarity of style and fruit not achievable by other modern presses.
  • Traditional wooden open ferments will be used with fermenting capacity of 3 tonne parcels.
