Sydney Cellar Door in the Rocks- Coming September 2021
Château Tanunda is thrilled to announce it is bringing the Barossa to Sydney permanently.
Located in the unique heritage precinct of 'The Rocks' in Sydney, Château Tanunda's private wine tasting room will be housed in an atmospheric 1860s sandstone original building. The concept offers a space where wine enthusiasts can explore some of the Barossa's most distinctive wines during privately hosted wine experiences in the heart of Australia's largest city.
Due to open in September 2021, fine wine specialist Justin Lambert has been engaged to manage the tasting room and looks forward to his role as a Barossa ambassador.
"This exciting initiative is the first of its kind for Sydney. Our Old Vines Expressions tasting experience is an exploration of some of the rarest wines in the world, from vines that are 50, 100 and 150 years old," says Justin. "The space is intimate, with groups limited to 18 people, to create hosted experiences that are truly personal and special."
Château Tanunda's private wine tasting room is ideal for lovers of wine, celebration occasions, wine clubs and corporate groups.
"Our new tasting room provides the perfect base in the city from which to share our distinguished Barossa wines with a wide audience, while also giving us the opportunity to venture into the boardrooms and offices of the CBD to host wine experiences directly with corporate teams," says Justin.
The unique cellar door is set to offer privately hosted tastings of Château Tanunda's most sought after wines from the Single Vineyard 'The Chateau', through to the Terroirs of the Barossa and rare and collectable Old Vine Expressions from 50, 100 and 150 year-old vineyards.
The immersive experiences can be booked online or directly with the tasting room.

FAQS with Michelle Geber, Managing Director of Château Tanunda
What has inspired Château Tanunda to launch a tasting room in Sydney?
Château Tanunda signage at St James station entrance. We have the heritage sign at St James Station on Hyde Park where the World War soldiers embarked on trains to war, so we have a presence in Sydney and a strong historical angle of significance in Australia.
Now with Covid-19 and erratic border closures, we have to take The Barossa to Sydney and also to where our largest Australian Chinese community exists.
Why was The Rocks the chosen location?
The Rocks is historic, like “The Château”, built in 1890. The Château Tanunda cellar door in Nurse Walk was built in 1861 – so we share the footprint in 3 centuries and the same building material of the era.
What type of atmosphere and environment would the tasting room deliver?
A similar cellar door experience that we have in The Barossa, show casing our “Old Vine Expression” 50 / 100 / 150 year wines made from some of the oldest vines in the world. Imagine a genuine cellar atmosphere like you would find in the old world – intriguing / authentic.
Show casing to the world that our vines are among the oldest in the world.
What type of experience can future visitors expect?
It’s a one on one tasting experience bringing “The Barossa” to Sydney – a tasting experience of wines from some of the oldest vines in the world. Old Vine Expressions, 16 soil types of the Barossa, wine maps.
We can cater for elite groups of corporate and wine enthusiast experiences – specialty occasion events up to 18 people. With many wonderful hotels located in the vicinity, it is perfect for their guests who wish to explore the top end of Barossa Wines while holidaying in the heart of Australia's largest city.
Exclusive bookings are encouraged to take over the whole cellar door. A place for our customers, retailers and concierges to meet. An educational centre for sommelier tasting days.
When is the tasting room expected to open its doors?
Soft opening in late July 2021, with the official opening scheduled for 1st August 2021.
