100 YEAR OLD VINES Shiraz 2009

Tasting Notes

The classic regional characters of dense, spicy blueberry fruit along with hints of liquorice, plum and all-spice are all delicately interwoven with 1/3 new and 2/3 older French oak. 2009 has all the hallmarks of being a truly great Eden Valley vintage and we believe this wine will age gracefully for 10 years+

Winemaking

Hand picked, basket pressed and unfiltered, the gentle unobtrusive winemaking has captured the subtle and intriguing characters of these Shiraz Vines.
The grapes were destalked (separating berries from the bunch) and placed uncrushed into small stainless steel open fermenters. A cultured yeast was used to start the fermentation and the tanks were hand plunged spending 15 days on skins at 28° C. Further maturation in French Oak Hogsheads and Barriques for 18 months has resulted in a wine of great structure and finesse.

Comes from three vineyards in the Eden Valley, Marananga and Vine Vale areas of the Barossa, and given Rolls Royce treatment in the winery; the smooth and supple palate is no more than medium-bodied, but is beautifully balanced and structured; black fruits, mocha, fruitcake, spice and licorice are all woven into the whole, French oak also adding a touch of class.

Deep purple-black in color, the 2009 The Chateau 100 Year Old Vines Shiraz has an intense nose of freshly crushed blueberries and black cherries with suggestions of sage, black pepper, lavender and iodine. Full bodied and generously fruited with layers of crushed berry and earthy/herbal flavors, it is framed by a medium level of chewy tannins and crisp acid, finishing long. Drink it now to 2020+. Importer: Banfi Vintners, Old Brookville, NY www.banfivintners.com

Full bodied and supple, this wine shows an interesting array of sensory notes for Barossa Shiraz, with notes ranging from espresso, tar, mint and green peppercorn to dark chocolate and blueberry. Finishes long and softly dusty, suggesting the ability to age through 2020, although it’s very drinkable now.

Deep red colour, with a tinge of brick-red and little purple left. Earth and plum aromas, some development but not so complex as yet. It's full-bodied and soft textured, fleshy and smooth. A really nice wine texturally, and needs more time to build more complexity.
