100 Year Old Vines Shiraz 2013

Tasting Notes

The classic regional characters of dense, spicy blueberry fruit along with hints of liquorice, plum and all-spice are all delicately interwoven.

Winemaking

Made from the grapes of vines that are over 100 years old. Hand-picked, basket-pressed and unfiltered, the gentle unobtrusive winemaking has captured the subtle and intriguing characters of these centenarian Shiraz vines. The grapes were destalked and placed uncrushed into small stainless steel open fermenters. A cultured yeast was used to start the fermentation and the tanks were hand plunged spending 15 days on skins at 28° C. Further maturation in a combination of American and French oak hogsheads and barriques for 22 months has resulted in a wine of great structure and finesse.

Deep, rich, red/purple colour. Smoky toasty and black plum savoury bouquet, with hints of chocolate, soy sauce, black olive, tapenade, etc. It's very rich, dense, fleshy and concentrated. Great texture and softness, with superb depth and effortless length. Superb - even elegant - wine.

Can’t recall tasting a better Shiraz from Chateau Tanunda.  Well done toast smeared with plum and dark cherry jam, shake of pepper and spice, chocolate, mint, vanilla and olive tapanade. Medium to full bodied, dark fruited and dark chocolaty, but with a serious more savoury side too. Combines fruit weight and depth without the heaviness and plodding burden of many a Barossa red, and offers chewy tannin and even acidity to keep it trim. Glimmers of raspberry and vanilla nougat bob up on a rugged, but well controlled finish of excellent length. And it’s the length that marks it out as a special wine, I reckon.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2013 The Chateau 100 Year Old Vines Shiraz offers a gorgeous nose of baked blackberries, black cherry coulis and licorice with chocolate box and baking spice accents. Medium to full-bodied with plenty of black berry preserves and spice flavors, it has velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and multilayered. 2015 - 2023
