50 Year Old Vines Shiraz 2016
Tasting Notes

Medium to deep crimson/purple. Powerfully intense aniseed, blackberry, mulberry and blueberry fruit aromas, with ginger, mint notes. Vigorous and fleshy with generous blueberry, blackberry flavors, excellent mid-palate richness and plentiful brambly-chocolatey tannins.

Winemaking

The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and spend seven days on their skins in open fermenters with hand-plunging twice daily to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins.

This is followed by careful basket pressing and malolactic fermentation in a combination of new and seasoned American and French oak prior to 24 months maturation in our cellars.

In keeping with our non-interventionalist winemaking style we neither fine nor filter this wine.

Vineyard

The grapes from this wine come from just three small vineyards in the Bethany, Marananga and Light Pass parishes of the Barossa. The Bethany vineyard lies on sandy loams and alluvial clays, while the Light Pass vineyard is on alluvial Sandy Brown loams, and the Marananga on rich red brown loams.

Planting in the 1960’s was a time of innovation, new viticultural know-how and technology was opening up the possibility of new site selection. Barossa is home to some of the oldest continuously producing vineyards in the world. Over 175 year tradition of wine growing and phylloxera free. 50 year Old Shiraz Vines represent less than 4% of the regions plantings

Good depth of bright red/purple colour. Rich, spicy black plum bouquet, the palate lavish, full-bodied and spicy with a light sprinkling of oak. It's very full-bodied, rich, deep and concentrated, with lovely flavour and balance. Tannins are ample and supple. Sweetly ripe, almost decadent, flavour.

This is stunning; the richly expressed bouquet shows blackberry, dark plum, vanillin oak, cocoa and toasted spice characters, followed by a sumptuous palate that is superbly weighted and expansive. It is powerfully graceful, loaded with delicious flavours. At its best: now to 2030. AU$75.00.
