Selling coals to Newcastle? Or Newcastle to Coles. Or Woolies. Or neither in this case as it’s only available through the old Chateau’s cellar door. Anyway, it’s the Chateau’s new wine made by shiny new winemaker Stuey Bourne, who apart from his penchant for wearing hats best suited to stick thin models wearing heavy mascara in the Swinging Sixties, is something of a talent. He has the touch. So here’s a blend of Shiraz (41%), Grenache (24%), Mataro (22%), Carignan (7%) and Cinsaut (6%) made from various parts of the Barossa Valley, no doubt featuring amazingly diverse and fascinating soil types.

Like plenty of '12 Barossan reds this has seriously dark colours, looking thick and full. It smells quite juicy and lighter than this, with a swathe of French vanilla oak lacquer over black pepper fruit juiciness. That juiciness extended through the palate too, sweetened up by a little oak but otherwise all about slippery,  raspberry, meaty fruit and light tannins, the palate structure very smooth but contained by tannins.Super affable and genuinely approachable early to mid-term drinker, with Barossa written all over it.....read more

The percentage contributions are 41/24/22/7/6% from five districts across the Barossa Valley; the components spent 10 months in American and French oak prior to blending. The result is a lively, juicy wine, with a wanton display of fruit flavours first up, then balancing, gently savoury tannins on the finish.
