Grand Barossa Cabernet Malbec 2016
Tasting Notes

Lifted aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant and vanilla are accompanied by vibrant, rich dark berry fruits on the palate. The finish is long with fine-grained tannins from sixteen months maturation in a combination of new and older French oak hogsheads.

This classic blend combines the refined structure and rich fruit of Cabernet with the generous dark berry flavours of Malbec.

Although drinking well now, this wine may be cellared for up to ten years from vintage.

Winemaking

For our Grand Barossa wines we select grapes grown throughout the Barossa and its myriad of sub-regions. It is this tapestry of ‘terroirs’ which enables us to create our classic and refined house style.

The grapes are destemmed, but not crushed, and fermented in small stainless steel open fermenters. Fermenatation takes place over 7 days with twice daily hand plunging.

After draining the free run juice, the skins are gently pressed in the JLB Vaslin Bucher press and transferred to barrel for 16 months maturation in a mixture of new and seasoned oak barrels. The Cabernet and Malbec are then expertly blended to enrich and enhance the characteristics of both varieties for a refined, generous wine.

Just 10% malbec is enough to flesh out the cabernet while adding a depth of flavour. Plenty of dark fruit, ripe mulberries and currants with freshly rolled tobacco, warm earth and a floral lift, it's particularly spicy. Full-bodied and holds its ripe tannins and oak well.

A wonderfully flavoursome red; the delightfully expressed bouquet shows blackcurrant, spiced plum, vanilla and cedary wood characters with subtle spicy complexity. It is succulent and gorgeously rounded on the palate, delivering loads of tasty flavours backed by plenty of silky tannins. At its best: now to 2026
