Matthews Road Cabernet Sauvignon 2013
Tasting Notes

Directly from the heart of Eden Valley, the Cabernet Sauvignon is from our cool climate, high altitude vineyard.

A concentrated wine with the expected regional characteristics of mint leaves and ripe dark forest berries on the nose. Well framed tannins and acidity balancing with the subtle toasty oak towards a lengthy finish

Winemaking

The grapes were destemmed, but not crushed, and spent seven days fermenting on their skins in open fermenters for more control of each single parcel of grapes. We undertake hand plunging at least twice daily during ferment to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins.

The wine is then carefully basket-pressed for a more gentle extraction, and softer mouthfeel to the finished wine. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels, before being transferred to a selection of new and seasoned French and American oak to mature for 16 months.

A quite concentrated wine which also shows typical Eden Valley mint, leaf, raspberry and blackberry aromas. Medium to full-bodied, intensely flavoured, elegant and balanced, with fresh acidity contributing to the lively mid-palate and finish.

“Juicy and well appointed with ripe raspberry, blackcurrant, some mint and coconut.  Medium to full bodied, juicy red and black berries, just off sweet, toasty oak in the background, some fleshy grainy tannin and pretty decent length.  Has a good amount of depth for a wine at this price.  All up, very good.”
