Matthews Road Single Vineyard Shiraz 2014
Tasting Notes

This wine displays lifted aromas of blackberry, blueberry and white pepper supported by classic cool climate Shiraz characters of spicy, dark berry fruits on the palate.

The extensive finish is framed by elegant, fine-grained tannins from sixteen months’ maturation in a combination of new and seasoned American and French oak barrels.

Winemaking

Fruit for the Matthews Road Shiraz comes from our cool climate, high altitude vineyard at the heart of the Barossa’s Eden Valley sub-region.

The grapes were destemmed, but not crushed, and spent seven days fermenting on their skins in open fermenters for more control of each single parcel of grapes. We undertake hand plunging at least twice daily during ferment to more gently extract colour, flavours and tannins.

The wine is then carefully basket-pressed for a more gentle extraction, and softer mouthfeel to the finished wine. It then undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels, before being transferred to a selection of new and seasoned French and American oak to mature for 16 months.

Yet another incredible release off this fantastic Eden Valley vineyard. Crammed with plums and sweet blackberries. Well balanced, beautifully made. Plush and velvety, with silky choc mint and interwoven spice with concentrated dark fruits. Throughout, the poise and detail are never forsaken, the wine never muscling its way through the crowd. A favourite of all whom seem to try it.

(Eden Valley) Deep red colour with a tinge of purple and a spicy, raspberry, slightly graphite aroma. The wine is soft and medium to full-bodied, with gentle tannins and fresh acidity which helps cleanse the finish. Good value.
