The Chateau Single Vineyard Eden Valley Chardonnay 2022
Tasting Notes

Aromas of citrus, pear and white peach lead to enticing stone fruit and fig flavours on the palate. Crisp acidity, complex layering with a hint of nougat and vanilla culminate in a long seamless finish.

Winemaking

Hand-picked from select rows in our high altitude Eden Valley vineyard. The grapes are whole bunch basket-pressed, before the juice is run to barrel for fermentation. Wild and inoculated fermentation is encouraged. Regular lees stirring and 8 month’s maturation in new and seasoned French oak barriques gives the wine beautiful texture and complexity.

Vineyard

Soil Type: Deep clay loam contrast sandy loam soils on dark brown subsoil.

Ripe peach, nutty and creamy oak aromas. Rich, ripe and opulent on the palate, stone fruit, melon, nougat, layered and long.[...] a very enjoyable wine. 2023-2026

It's splendidly composed and expressed, showing ripe stone fruit, rockmelon, lemon peel and vanillin oak aromas, followed by a wonderfully weighted palate offering excellent weight and creamy flow. Delightfully framed by juicy acidity, finishing long and silky. At its best: now to 2030.

Signature scents assigned to Eden Valley Riesling appear here; the white flowers, spring blossom, the scent of lime pulp, the lively citrus notes. They rise from the glass, invitingly so, accompanied by white peach and apple. While the aromatics carry a clear Eden Valley stamp, the flavour profile takes on its own distinctive personality with a core of concentrated Chardonnay: warm, rich and smooth. This is a solid expression of the grape delivered with some sophistication. Stone fruits, lemon curd, apple, lime zest and grapefruit skin are crisp and clean against a background of soft vanillin French oak. It’s not shy, neither is it loud, rather it flows strong and long across the tongue, some gentle spice here, discreet nutty/leesy influences there, all wrapped in a fresh citrussy acidity.

A very tidy example of Eden Valley chardonnay in a good season. Aromas of fig and stone fruit with a little crème brulee richness. It’s all cut with an edgy pear and lemon zest aroma. The palate is richly flavoured but still controlled and linear with a final lick of vanilla bean and spice.
